Constructing Excellence Wales Award, Innovation Category Winner 2011

The Larch House was recognised for its groundbreaking innovation at the Constructing Excellence Wales Awards 2011 in Cardiff in July 2011. The Innovation Award acknowledges the bravery of the project to create a unique building which leads the way in zero carbon low cost construction in housing.

The innovation award is about getting away from the idea that we should continue to do what we have always done, because we feel comfortable with it. It is about developing new solutions to the problems we encounter and achieving an innovative solution which enhances the value of the finished product, without increasing the risks associated with it. It will highlight innovation in finding technical or environmental solutions and overcoming problems within a project or process.

The judges said “the Larch House totally challenges normal housing conventions with a plethora of new solutions that caught our imagination.” There is a huge amount for the industry to learn from Passivhaus and the judges commented that the implications of it are potentially groundbreaking.

The Innovation Award was not the only win of the evening for the UK’s first zero carbon Passivhaus as Holbrook Timber Frame from Bridgend, who constructed the timber frame for Larch House, was recognised with the prestigious SME Award following nomination by the project partners for their outstanding commitment to improvement and best practice, to sustainability and health and safety.

All winners from the Constructing Excellence Wales Awards are automatically shortlisted for the Constructing Excellence National Awards which will take place in November.
