The fair-faced concrete lower floor will be crowned by a timber superstructure

The fair-faced concrete lower floor of this Passive House on a Buckinghamshire hillside is nearing completion. The timber framed superstructure is due for delivery and erection towards the end of September and will be watertight and draught free a couple of weeks later.

This will be a super-comfortable and cheap to run all-electric house. It does not rely on ideal southerly orientation for solar gains, illustrating the fact that Passive House buildings can be tuned to work for any site. Although connected to the electricity grid, it is being designed with sufficient solar photovoltaic panels to supply its tiny total energy needs throughout the year, illustrating how the dream of a truly zero carbon future is within our grasp.

Dear Justin, It is great to see a pv supplied all-electric Passive House being build. Significantly reducing the energy demand first and then generating what is still needed with pv panels makes sense. But as far as PHPP & PH certification is concerned, is a conversion factor of 2.5 (?) not applied regardless whether the electricity comes from the roof, or a coal fired power plant? If so, it might be difficult to stay below the 120kWh/m2a limit. And one more "but": with that much concrete used, how can that house be "truly zero carbon"? Bye, Christian
Sorry about answering / correcting my own comment, but the pv-electricity conversion factor in PHPP is 0.7, so with enough output staying below 120kWh/m2a should be no problem. Christian
