From time to time there are priceless email debates between members of the RIBA Sustainable Futures Committee. These debates are often concluded by wise words from Bill Bordass with illuminating attachments from his archives. One day someone must produce a book bringing together in one place all of Bill's written and professional work. 

A recent debate concluded on the topic of 'New Professionalism' and I have attached, with Bill's permission, pdfs of a written document and three slide shows of huge importance to all of us working in the construction sector.

Mayville Community Centre Passivhaus

The Mayville Community Centre has been shortlisted in the 3R Awards Public Building category alongside Central Hall, Keighley (Hodson Architects) and The Octagon, Haringey (Mace).  The winners will be anounced at an awards ceremony on 10th November at The Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington.


I noticed a wasp on the side of my bee hive clutching what looked like the head of a bee, before flying off. Then I noticed a bee running through the grass, seemingly confused and in a panic. I wondered if it had been attacked. A couple of wasps were buzzing around in the grass in front of the hive. Another one seemed to fly off with the head of a bee. So I put a terracotta tile in front of the hive and lay down in the grass to watch.....


Bere:architects has been shortlisted in the BD Architect of the Year Awards 2011 for Environmental Excellence alongside Arup Associates and Sheppard Robson. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday 15th November at the Brewery in the City of London.

Cost Effective Solutions to Social Housing, Paper presented by Justin Bere at the 15th International Passive House Conference 2011 in Innsbruck, Austria


Justin's hardworking bees arrived at their new home on one of the green roofs at Poets Road a month ago and today Ian Bailey, from Hackney City Farm visited to check how all 15,000 of them had settled and to give us a training session. 


The Camden Passivhaus has been shortlisted in the Daily Telegraph British Homes Awards 2011 Small House category alongside Mission Hall by Adam Richards Architects and The Shadow House by Liddicoat & Goldhill. With sound ecological credentials we are delighted to be putting Passivhaus buildings at the forefront of architectural recognition.


We have received shortlistings in three categories, Sustainable Consultancy, Low Energy Housing and Sustainable Housing Retrofit in the Sustainable Housing Awards 2011.
