Constructing Excellence Berkshire - Retrofit & Rebuild: Decisions, Design and Finance

The growth in retrofit and refurbishment within the construction sector is set to continue for some time.  The need for efficiency, carbon reduction, and limited capital availability are all driving growth in the area.  In this Constructing Excellence Seminar to be held in Reading we look at how some organisations are dealing with these challenges:

Decisions: The Association of University Directors of Estates (AUDE), have produced a decision making tool which aides organisations’ in their consideration of holistic view of a building, in its decision making (http://www.aude.ac.uk/info-centre/1960s_project). Suzanne Pitcher of Provelio will be presenting on its practical application in the decision making process.

Design: The Passivhaus movement is gaining momentum around the world.  According to the BRE, it is the fastest growing energy performance standard in the world.  Often associated with new build residential developments, Passivhaus is being used in commercial and community / public realm buildings around the world, and has practical applications in refurbishment.  Bere Architects are award winning Architects based in London, who’s Mayville Community Centre project is leading the way in Passivhaus refurbishment (http://www.bere.co.uk/projects/mayville-community-centre-passivhaus). Justin Bere will be presenting on the practical application of Passivhaus design in refurbishment.

Finance:  The Green Deal (http://www.decc.gov.uk/assets/decc/legislation/energybill/1010-green-dea...) represents for some, an opportunity for financial incentive for sustainable refurbishment and retrofit.  Jon Da Souza of Constructing Excellence will be presenting on the opportunities within the green deal that will impact on the financial business case for retrofit and refurbishment.
