Ecobuild: Soft Landings - Using Submetering to Close the In-Use Performance Gap

Nick Newman, associate director, bere:architects will present a talk as part of the ‘Buildings In Use’ seminar stream which has sessions running on all three days of Ecobuild. Nick is speaking on Thursday 7th March in the ‘Soft Landings’ session which runs from 12:30-14:00, on ‘Using Submetering to Close the In-Use Performance Gap’.

Improving the energy efficiency of all buildings is critical if the built environment is to make a significant contribution to cutting carbon emissions.  Equally important is a low energy design approach for new-build.  However, the performance gap persists (energy use is consistently higher than predicted). The Buildings In Use stream tackles the interconnected issues of the performance gap; post-occupancy evaluation; building performance evaluation; and the Soft Landings programme which the Government is rolling out in 2016.

The UK Government will be mandating Soft Landings and Performance Occupancy Evaluation (POE) for all public buildings in 2016. It is important that occupiers fully understand how best to achieve optimum energy savings. The Soft Landings approach will ensure that occupiers have an opportunity to fully understand how a building works in a “handover” period post commissioning, allowing for a continued dialogue with occupiers after commissioning and gives an opportunity for occupiers to give feedback on operational issues as they arise in the early years post-completion.
