Plectic House – complexity made simple

Our new, ultra-low cost, ultra simple Passive House and Artist's Studio has been awarded planning permission in the London Borough of Southwark. The timber framed house will have light-filled interiors of natural materials with uncompromisingly raw finishes. It will demonstrate the common sense in simple detailing, low-cost construction and healthy, comfortable living.

Located in an area of south London which is fast becoming a haven for artists and designers, the proposal contains an artist’s studio on the ground floor opening on to a small south facing garden with living accommodation on the two floors above. The rear elevation opens up to the south to maximise solar gains and natural daylight.

The walls of the house will be faced with cement fibre board and include integrated bird and bat boxes. A walled roof garden will contain raised beds for growing vegetables together with a wildflower meadow. Rainwater will be collected from the roof. Solar thermal and PV panels will supply hot water and electricity.

The building will be made from a UK-sourced timber framed structure and the roof will be finished with a new kind of breathable membrane that allows insulation to be placed between the roof joists while eliminating the need for ventilation and the risk of interstitial condensation. All materials used will be environmentally friendly and the design will incorporate energy efficient lighting throughout.
