Designer's rural retreat

The intention of this project was to create a contemporary garden evolved from the English landscape tradition and it involved both extensive soft and hard landscaping. The finished project includes a re-planned approach to the main house, the addition of a new external swimming pool within a traditional walled garden and three new external pools linking the domestic garden seamlessly with the wider flat landscape of the Kent countryside. The project demonstrates how, in an historic environment, a sensitive approach to contemporary design is simultaneously compatible with the use of traditional materials and building techniques as well as pioneering renewable energy technology. The design won a SPATA award, 2002.
